The Kurukshetra War Begins - Bhishma Parva

Negotiations fail, The War Begins

When all peace negotiations between the Kauravas and Pandavas fail, war becomes inevitable. Even Bhagwan Krishna himself went as a messenger to Hastinapur to convince Dhritrashtra, Bheeshma and the other elders to avoid war but the adamant Duryodhana , backed by his trusted and loyal friend Karna, refuses to give in. Duryodhana and Arjuna approach Krishna for him in the war. Duryodhana wanted his entire Vrishni army whereas the wise Arjuna wanted only Bhagwan Krishna on his side. Thus begins the war between Dharma and Adharma.

Bhishma Parva

Preparations of War begin in both the factions. Kunti the mother of the Pandavas is very concerned about her Sons , including Karna. So she meets Karna secretly and reveals to him that she is his mother. She begs him not to kill her sons and is also concerned about him. The generous Karna promises her that he will not touch any of her sons except Arjuna. So she will have either Arjuna or Karna alive.
Meanwhile, Bhishma is made the Commander of the Kaurava troops and Dhrishtadyumna is the Commander of Pandava troops. The armies camp on the banks of the Hiranvati river. Rules of Combat are laid out. Krishna is Arjuna's charioteer and so he is also called Partha Sarathy.

Bhagavad Geeta

Yudhishtra being Dharmaputra takes blessings from all the elders including Bheeshma, Dronacharya and Kripacharya from the Kaurava side. They all bless him and assure him that success will be theirs. He then asks Arjuna to survey the army. Arjuna looks at all his cousins, his grandfather, his gurus and his other relatives and is deeply saddenend that he has to fight them. He becomes weak and tells Krishna that he cannot and will not fight this army. Krishna then propounds the great "Bhagavad Geeta" to Arjuna. The Geeta spans 18 chapters and in essence Krishna tells him that it is his Dharma only to fight without thinking about the results. Hence the first day of the war begins......
