Hari Om,

In  Balavihar, after our initial slokas, and a bhajan we learnt a new verse in the Geeta chanting!!

In class, there is a lot of excitement about upcoming events. Luckily, this year we are doing a play based on some scenes of Mahabharatha. We are working on the details, but we know that it is taking place in March! We were given options in class about the scenes we should do. Parents were invited to the class to discuss their participation. the next few weeks will be very important for student attendance so everyone's efforts are maximized. Get creative with the topic also and HAVE FUN!!!! :-)

Role selections for March Play

Section 1 and 2

After the morning prayers….
Role Selections for Mahabharata Play in March:
This week in the 6th grade Balavihar class, we talked about the actors, narrators, and the rest in the play. The play is scheduled for March on Shivaratri day. All the students got their roles, we read our lines and some of the actors did a little acting. The teachers told us how we should talk loud and with emotion. They also said that we will only be able to act for one story due to the time limit. The teachers put all the actor roles in a hat and all the actors chose one slip. The teachers did this so that it would be fair to everyone. Towards the end of the class, we sang the Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 13) and did Aarti. This is what we did in the class this week.

Reminder for Parents: Over the next few classes we will be actively practicing for the play. So please make sure that the kids do not miss Balavihar these weeks.

Udyoga Parva

We started the class with morning prayers.

We finished the Virata Parva (4th Parva) and we started learning the
Udyoga Parva (5th Parva). Some of the important characters in the
Virata Parva were Kanaka, Vallala, Brinannala, Damagranthi, Tantripala
and Sairandhri.
Duryodhana refuses to cede to the Pandavas their rightful kingdom of Indraprastha. He even refused to part with 5 villages that Yudhishtra asks for. Duryodhana was adamant that he will vanquish the Pandavas. So this paves the way for war between the Pandavas and Kauravas.

The Udyoga Parva deals with negotiations and taking sides for the war. In one incident, Krishna is sleeping and Arjuna is sitting at his feet and Duryodhana is sitting at his head. When Krishna first wakes up, he sees Arjuna and he gives him first choice to pick what he wants for the war. The two choices were Krishna or his army. Arjuna chooses Krishna and Duryodhana chooses Krishna's army.

We started talking about the 6th grade play on March 10th. There were
4 choices of scenes from Mahabharatha discussed. Some of the parents were in attendance.

For the play we chose our first and second choices for what we wanted
to do. The choices were Acting, Narrating, Dancing and Stage Crew/
Props.

We ended this week's session with Arathi and Pledge.

Journey of Grade 6 along with Pandavas into the forest and Arjuna's fight with Lord Shiva

 Section 1                                                    December 16, 2012

 Hari Om,

We started the class Chanting OM three times, and then the Shanti mantra to clear our minds and to fill with peace.

We sang the following daily prayers to help us with our lives:

Kaaragre vasate Lakshmi- Early in the morning after we get up from bed to start our day.

Saraswati Namastubyam- Before our studies to invoke Saraswatiji.

Brahmarpanam- Before we begin eating.

Shubham Karoti-before we turn on the evening lights, inviting Lakshmi in the form of health, happiness, good thoughts, and spirituality.

Karacharana Kritamva- Before we go to bed we pray to the lord to forgive us for all the bad actions, we did during the day.

We moved on to sing Ganesh bhajan followed by Gurusthotram, Dasavatara Strotram. Then we learned to chant 11,12 verses of chapter 13 of Bhagavad Geeta, after a short break of attendance and an announcement.

Our teachers reviewed the last class lesson by asking us questions.

Today we studied the Pandavas journey into the forest. There were many Brahmins and citizens who wanted to follow them and didn't want them to leave Hastinapura.  Although Yudhishthira was deeply moved, he had to request them not to go, for he would not be able to take care of them.  Yudhishthira thought about how much food and shelter he would have to provide to all of them, they still would not listen to him.

The Sun god had appeared and offered Yudhishthira a vessel called Akshaypatra.  He informed him that the vessel would be full of food every morning to feed as many people as required until Draupadi had her share.  As soon as Draupadi cooked a little food it would multiply into however many portions as needed.  The Pandavas moved to the Kamyaka forest.

After the Pandavas left, Vidura told Duryodhana that he thought that for the good of everyone,  his brother should get the Pandavas back.  That suggestion angered Dritharashtra.  He made Vidura to leave the palace immediately.  Later Dhritarashtra repented for his actions, and sent a messenger to bring him back.  When Duryodhana heard of Vidura's visit to the forest and the quick return. he became uncomfortable.  Karna, Dussasana and Shakuni worked out a plan to go to the forest and kill the Pandavas.  Vyasa came to the palace just in time and warned Dhritharashtra to keep a close watch over his sons to avoid their death.  Then sage Maitreya came and told Duryodhana that banishing the Pandavas was not a good idea, but Duryodhana did not listen.  As he disregarded the advice, sage Maitreya got angry and cursed Duryodhana and said Bheema would kill him by smashing his thighs to death, if he did not make peace with them.

Krishna's Pledge:

Hearing of the Pandavas exile,  visitors many visitors like Draupadi's relatives and Krishna himself visited them.  Krishna was angry at the Pandavas trouble that heaven suggested that the Kauravas be destroyed immediately. However, Arjuna calmed him down.  Drishtadhyumna promised that he would kill Drona and Shikandi will end Bhisma.

 Arjuna's fight with Lord Shiva:

Upon the advice of the great sage Vyasa, Yudhishthira, learnt the powerful mantra 'Pratismriti' from him, and in turn taught to Arjuna to win the favor of the gods. Upon hid eldest brother's advice Arjuna went to acquire weapons from Indra, Rudra, Varuna, Kubera and Yama.  After he met Indra, and upon his advice Arjuna engaged himself in severe austerities, simply living on air.  Lord Shiva then assumed the form of Kirata (hunter), holding a bow came down with Parvati, clad in the dress of a huntress. At that time Arjuna sent a sharp arrow from his Gandiva, and Shiva too sent an arrow from his bow Pinaka, and shot a wild boar. Then a dispute rose on whose arrow killed the boar. They got into a fight wherein Arjuna lost his bow, and Shiva held him in his grip. As Arjuna meditated on Lord Shiva to get his help, he realized that the hunter was none other than Shiva himself.  When Arjuna prostrated to the hunter and his wife, Shiva and Parvati blessed him with the the Pasupata Astra(weapon)........which emits thousands of arrows, spears and maces like poisonous snakes at the same time, and blessed him that he would soon acquire many more.

Then Arjuna went to Indra's palace and his father's greatness struck Arjuna.  Indra taught him the art of using several weapons like Indra's thunderbolt.  Arjuna also learnt music and dance from Chitrasena.  One day Urvashi, one of the Apsaras of Indraloka, fell in love with Arjuna and begged him to spend some time with her.  But Arjuna regarded her as his mother and refused her request.  Urvashi got mad at him and cursed him to lead the life of a dancer among women. When Indra was informed of it, he consoled Arjuna, and said, "blessed is the mother of such a disciplined son. You have surpassed even the Rishis in self control.  Do not worry Urvashi's curse will be helpful to you in the thirteenth year of exile".

We stopped there and did meditation to silent our minds, and dedicated that peace to the Victims of Newtown, Connecticut.  After that, we sang the ending prayers, and did aarti and pledge.

Hari Om,
Midushi and Nandita.

Bhima meets Hanuman...

Section 1                                                         6th Jan 13

First we started with our routinely morning prayers and chanted geeta up to verse 16. Then we continued our Mahabharata story.

When the Pandavas were in a hermitage there was a very powerful gust of wind carrying a thousand petaled lotus flower. Draupadi was amazed by its beauty and asked BhÄ«ma to get a few for her. On his journey to find the flowers, Bhima found a cave with a monkey resting at the front. Thinking it was just a mere animal he tried to scare it away but it would not budge. Then monkey told Bhima that he was too old to move and asked him to carry him. Bhima attempted to lift his tail but to his surprise, he could not! The monkey revealed his true identity as Hanuman; Bhima’s own brother and let him pass. He finally came to the river with the lotus flowers he was looking for. Bhima killed all the Yakshas who were guarding the river and took the flowers. Yudhishthira came in search of Bhima and seeing the Yakshas dead, he told Bhima not to fight without his permission.

Arjuna finally arrived from Indra’s palace with the divine weapons that he had acquired. He told his brothers how he got them and also demonstrated them. They caused lots of terror and destruction, so Narada appeared and advised him to use the weapons wisely.
Then the Pandavas moved on to the plains. One day while Bhima was exploring, a large snake attacked him. The python was much stronger than Bhima and coiled around him. When Bhima asked who the serpent was, the snake replied that he was Nahusha who had been cursed to live as a snake. Then Yudhishthira found Bhima and agreed to answer Nahusha’s questions related to dharma. When Yudhishthira answered the questions, Bhima was released. Nahusha had turned into a man and told them told about his curse.

In Hastinapura, Duryodhana, Karna and Sakuni were plotting against the Pandavas. They took a big group of people to show their luxury that the Pandavas did not have. But at the entrance of the forest the Gandharvas did not let them in. Duryodhana commanded his soldiers to fight them but they were defeated. Chitrasena took him as a hostage. When the news arrived to the Pandavas, Yudhishthira told his brothers to go and rescue the Kauravas. After the fight, Chitrasena told that Arjuna was his friend, and that he wanted to teach Duryodhana a lesson. He released the shameful Kauravas. Duryodhana wanted to end his own life but Karna advised him not to.

One day, Sage Durvasa came to Duryodhana’s palace with his people, so Duryodhana fed them well to avoid the sage’s anger. Suddenly, he had an idea. He asked the sage to visit the Pandavas. He knew that they did not have enough food and Sage Durvasa would curse them. Once the sage and his followers had arrived, Draupadi became worried because she had eaten already and the Akshayapatra was empty. When Sage Durvasa went to take a bath, Draupadi prayed to Krishna for some more food. Sure enough, Krishna appeared and asked her for some food. Surprisingly, Draupadi found a small morsel in the Akshayapatra. Once he ate, he told the Pandavas to invite the Sage and his disciples for a meal. But surprisingly, the sage and his followers felt very full and left without coming for the meal, since they didn’t want to refuse the food.

When the Pandavas were gone hunting, Jayadratha saw Draupadi and took her away forcefully. When Pandavas came back Bhima and Arjuna went to rescue Draupadi. They grabbed Jayadratha and punished him by shaving his hair with only five tufts of hair remaining. Each one represented one of the Pandavas. He was released by the mercy of Yudhishthira. He did a penance for a boon from Lord Shiva. Shiva gives a boon that Jayadratha could defeat Pandavas except for Arjuna.

After the Pandavas stay in the forest was over, Indra decides to help them by taking away Karna’s weapons kavacha and kundala. But Sun god appears in Karna’s dream and tells him that this would happen and to take Shakti weapon from Indra. When Indra came as a Brahmin, Karna tells him he knew who he was and asks him for Shakti weapon. Indra granted his boon and said he could use it only once if there was no other choice.

One day Pandavas tried to help a Brahmin when a deer took away his fire sticks. They chased the deer and became lost. Yudhishthira asks Nakula to get some water. When Nakula reached a lake, he heard a voice not to drink water without answering his questions. But he ignores the voice and dies after drinking water. Yudhishthira sent the remaining brothers but the same thing happens to them. Finally Yudhishthira goes himself and answers all the questions correctly and the Yaksha appears and offers him to bring back one of his brothers. Yudhishthira asks for Sahadeva as he wanted at least one son of Madri to be alive. But all Pandavas come back to life and the Yaksha reveals himself as Dharma, the father of Yudhishtira. He gets very happy and grants them a boon to take any form they wished any time during the thirteenth year of exile and they would not be recognized. This would help to complete their last year of punishment.

At the end of class we did our closing prayers and our teacher told us about an upcoming event that will take place. We had great class at Balavihar learning about these new Mahabharata stories.
